Science Showcase

The science week showcase event saw Oakwood pupils, along with pupils from Winterhill, Blackburn Primary and Sitwell Primary, engage in a thrilling day of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities. The day began with some exciting keynote speakers from Bentley Motors who showed the pupils an insight into the careers available in the automotive industry. Nicola Gough took them through her amazing career in the industry and Julia Muir inspired the students with the idea of ‘Moonshot thinking’. The day continued with the pupils’ science fair. Over science week, pupils created projects looking at tackling some real world issues. They looked into the past and forward to the future to develop new technology, transport and farming. The pupils articulated and displayed their projects fantastically and were able to share their ideas with their peers, teachers and even the Mayor of Rotherham! The Mayor said he had a fantastic day and thought the pupils of Rotherham had created some fantastic pieces of work, particularly those that surrounded the idea of sustainability for the future. After lunch, the pupils took part in some workshops delivered by some local businesses and Miss Fiddes. They tried some chromatography, 3D printing and tetrahedron building to develop STEM skills such as teamwork, communication and creativity. The external companies commented on how well behaved the pupils were and an amazing time was had by all.
