Get Up To Speed (GUTS) event at Magna Science Adventure Centre

On Wednesday 18th April Year 9 pupils were given the opportunity to attend this event which showcased careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing sectors.

Just over 90 pupils attended the event and had the chance to try many interactive experiences including driving a Formula 1 simulator, building a Bailey Bridge, watch an automated robot at work, use an endoscope to identify vital organs in the body and even have a close encounter with Darth Vadar!

With over 50 employers, colleges and training organisations represented at the event, pupils were able to find out about the many careers they could progress into as well as the qualifications and subjects required to get into science and engineering jobs in the future.

Open Events

Year 11 pupils have had the chance to attend all of the following advertised open events this term including:-

Rotherham, Dearne Valley and Sheffield Colleges – these open events were a chance to find out about the range of courses and apprenticeships offered at the local colleges.

AMRC – Advanced Manufacturing and Research Centre – a chance to look around the training centre and find out about the Engineering apprenticeships available. Another date is available on 21st June 4.30 – 6.00pm.

Lifeskills – offered 3 taster days in April to find out more about the study programmes, traineeships and apprenticeships offered there.

Northern Racing College – a chance to find out about opportunities in the horse care and racing industries. Other open dates are available very month.

The Source at Meadowhall – held an Apprenticeship discovery day in May to showcase the apprenticeships and traineeships they offer.

South Yorkshire Police Volunteer Cadet Recruitment took place during April.

Pupils were invited to apply for the Police Cadet Scheme which is due to start in September 2018. To apply pupils had to be 15 years of age by 31 August 2018 and no older than 17 years of age by 31 March 2019. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, enjoy many new experiences and enhance future CV and employment prospects. 1 April until 30 April 2018. Forms available online from 1 April.

Inspiring Youth Award – Crown Court Liaison Project

Three Y10 pupils were given the opportunity to attend the Law Courts in Sheffield. They spent a day meeting various Law Professionals including a Judge and a Barrister and found out about the qualifications required to go into a career in Law. The day also included a tour of the Crown Court. The pupils worked as a team with pupils from other schools learning valuable team building and communication skills.


Local employers have advertised the following apprenticeship vacancies which Y11 pupils have been informed about and encouraged to apply.

• Crossroads Truck and Bus Limited were recruiting for Volvo HGV vehicle technicians
• Evernort in Dinnington were recruiting for 4 Engineering apprentices
• MTL Advance based in Brinsworth were advertising for Engineering and Business Administration Apprentices

• KnowHow - These vacancies are being advertised on The Source's website.  The assesment days for the Technical Support roles are next week on the 2nd and 3rd of July.  The dates for the sales roles are on the 16th and 17th of July.  Click here for further details.
