Post 16 Option planning

Oakwood staff and Year 11 pupils have been busy planning the next steps to take after GCSE’s….

Students have had the opportunity to find out about the range of pathways and options available after Year 11.Staff from Thomas Rotherham College, Rotherham College and The Department of Work and Pensions have been into assemblies to deliver presentations on A Levels, BTEC Qualifications, Vocational Qualifications and Apprenticeships.

On 15/10/19 we held The ‘Oakwood Post 16 Options Evening’. Year 11 pupils, parents & carers were invited into Oakwood to speak to employers, local colleges, sixth forms, training providers as well as universities. At this event, a series of presentations took place about the ‘World of Work’ and learning opportunities. Also, pupils were able to speak to a variety of organisations to find out information about Post 16 pathways and options.

The English Department have worked with Year 11 pupils to complete CV’s and Personal Statements to support Post 16 applications.
Mrs. Barton has worked with Year 11 pupils in their 1:1 careers interviews to help with decision making and explore Post 16 Options and career pathways.
Reminder to Year 11 pupils:

Can you please remember that you should be working on your MAP booklet and have clearance from Miss Atkin – Tank, Miss Samuel or Mrs.Barton to make applications.

Also mention your mock interviews will take place week commencing 27th January and will be held at Thomas Rotherham College. You will be sent more details about this after The Christmas Break.

Year 9 & Year 10 Construction Workshops

On 19/9/19, various construction companies were invited into Oakwood to work with Y9 and Y10 pupils. The students were able to learn about the various careers and opportunities in the construction industry and take part in practical workshops.

Year 10 Mind the Language Gap

On 11th October 6 Y10 Languages pupils went to the National College for Advanced Transport and Infrastructure in Doncaster to take part in a ‘Mind the Language Gap’ challenge. Oakwood pupils worked in groups with pupils from other schools to design an improvement to the rail system, create a trade stand and present to a panel of judges in French or German. The competition was fierce, but four of our pupils came away with prizes and they all felt that their confidence in their Language and communication skills had increased and they had a better understanding of the rail industry.

Year 9 & Year 10 Health & Social Care

The Samaritans recently visited Year 9 pupils to do some work on their health and wellbeing and to talk about their role in the community.

Dr Sanjay Suri, paediatrician from Rotherham Hospital was invited into Health & Social Care classes to do some Mindfulness sessions with Year 9 and Year 10 pupils to help them deal with stress.

Year 9 pupils attended an Allied Health Careers Fair at Rotherham Hospital to help them explore the various career pathways on offer within the National Health Service.
