Ancient History

Statement

‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it’ – George Santayana

The History curriculum aims to be more than just a series of lessons – it’s a journey designed to inspire, challenge, and empower students. Rooted in the belief that “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” we offer a dynamic and inclusive program that not only meets national standards but pushes beyond them. We bring history to life by exploring how Britain has evolved over time, its global influence, and the pivotal moments that have shaped modern society. From the Ancient World to the complexities of the 20th century, students will engage with historical content that fosters a deep understanding of cultural, ethical, and social change.

Our curriculum is built on five key pillars: Inclusivity and Aspiration, ensuring every voice is heard and every student feels challenged to reach their full potential; Foundational Literacy and Numeracy, giving students the communication skills and chronological understanding to excel in life beyond school; Ambitious and Sequenced Learning, thoughtfully designed to build on prior knowledge, deepen understanding, and foster critical analysis; Cultivating Independent Learners, where students are encouraged to think critically, debate confidently, and take ownership of their learning; and Holistic Personal Development, helping students grow not just as historians, but as responsible, empathetic, and active citizens who are ready to make a positive impact in the world.

Through this curriculum, Oakwood High School doesn’t just teach history – we shape confident, compassionate, and resilient individuals who understand the value of the past and are equipped to navigate the challenges of the future with curiosity, critical thought, and responsibility.

It has five key pillars:

Inclusive and Aspirational:

Our curriculum is designed to cater to the diverse backgrounds of the Rotherham community, by providing our students with engaging lessons, where their voices can be heard, whilst challenging misconceptions and fostering aspiration and ensuring all students are well-prepared for life in modern Britain and the wider world.

Foundational Literacy and Numeracy:

Through a strong focus on literacy, including reading, writing, and oracy, we equip students with the communication skills they need for future learning, employment, and participation in society. We provide opportunities to explore and discuss complex and challenging ideas, helping students to build the confidence to engage in respectful debate and dialogue — skills that are vital for modern life. History also encourages the importance of numeracy through our delivery of chronology.

Ambitious and Sequenced Learning:

Our History curriculum is carefully designed to build on the knowledge and skills taught at Key Stage 2. At Key Stage 3, we deepen this foundation through a broad study of world and British history, beginning with the Ancient World (Egypt, Rome, Mythology), and progressing through the Norman Conquest, Medieval life, the Tudors, Slavery, and 20th-century conflicts, including WWI, WWII, and the Holocaust, before culminating in Modern Britain. This promotes chronological understanding, cultural awareness, and ethical reflection. At Key Stage 4, students develop their historical thinking through focused depth and thematic studies. These topics encourage students to analyse causes, consequences, and interpretations in greater depth.

Cultivating Independent Learners:

Our History curriculum encourages students to become resilient, reflective, and resourceful by challenging them to engage with complex topics, think critically, and express their ideas with confidence. In lessons, students analyse evidence, debate interpretations, and learn from feedback, building independence and perseverance. Beyond the classroom, homework and wider research tasks promote ownership of learning, helping students connect the past to the present and prepare for future challenges with curiosity and confidence.

Holistic Personal Development:

Our History curriculum goes beyond the national curriculum by prioritizing the development of well-rounded individuals. It fosters character building, social-emotional skills, and responsible citizenship by encouraging students to engage with complex historical topics, reflect on past injustices, and understand the values of democracy, tolerance, and fairness. Through critical thinking and respectful discussion, students develop resilience, empathy, and the confidence to form their own informed viewpoints, preparing them to become responsible, compassionate citizens who can contribute positively to society.
