Child Development & Care

Statement

(NCFE CACHE Level 1/2 Technical Award in Child Development and Care in the Early Years)

“Inspiring the next generation of caregivers and educators to nurture, protect, and support the holistic development of every child.”

The Child Development and Care curriculum is designed to empower students with the essential knowledge, empathy, and skills to positively impact the lives of children. Our vision is to cultivate compassionate, reflective, and confident practitioners who understand the critical role of early years professionals in shaping young lives.

Key Pillars

Inclusive and Aspirational:

This curriculum is rooted in the diverse needs of the Rotherham community, ensuring every learner feels valued and capable of achieving their potential. It encourages students to embrace the richness of different cultures and family backgrounds, promoting inclusivity and high aspirations. Through case studies, real-world scenarios, and reflective discussions, students gain the skills needed to provide compassionate care and education for children from all walks of life.

Foundational Literacy and Numeracy:

Strong communication and numeracy are vital for early years practitioners. Our curriculum emphasises the development of reading, writing, speaking, and basic numeracy skills, preparing students to record observations, plan learning activities, and communicate effectively with children, families, and colleagues.

Ambitious and Sequenced Learning:

From understanding the stages of child development to exploring the principles of early years education, our curriculum is carefully sequenced across Years 9, 10, and 11 to build a deep, integrated understanding. It allows students to make clear links between theory and real-world practice, while developing critical thinking and reflective skills. Through focused study of content areas such as child development, care routines, and the role of the early years practitioner, learners gain a comprehensive insight into working with young children.

Cultivating Independent Learners:

The curriculum fosters independence by encouraging students to take ownership of their learning through reflective practice, self-assessment, and practical activities within the confines of the classroom setting. This approach helps students build resilience, confidence, and problem-solving skills, preparing them for the dynamic challenges of working in early years settings.

Holistic Personal Development:

Beyond academic achievement, the curriculum prioritises the development of well-rounded individuals who are compassionate, responsible, and socially aware. Students engage in activities that promote emotional intelligence, teamwork, and leadership, ensuring they leave the course ready to make a positive difference to the lives of children and their communities.
