English Literature

Statement

“The limits of my language are the limits of my world. All I know is what I have words for.” Ludwig Wittgenstein

The English curriculum at Oakwood empowers students to find their voice, connect with others, and understand the world through language. It inspires curiosity, creativity, compassion, and critical thinking; we encourage students to ‘read like a writer, write like a reader’. Through a rich variety of texts and purposeful writing opportunities, students develop the ability to communicate effectively and with confidence. Our vision is to cultivate confident readers and articulate writers who can appreciate diverse perspectives, make sense of complex ideas, and thrive in the wider world.

It has five key pillars:

Inclusive and Aspirational

Our curriculum is inclusive of all learners and reflective of the diverse Rotherham community. We ensure all students – regardless of background or starting point – can access a broad and rich English curriculum. Through a wide range of texts, from classical literature to contemporary voices, we expose students to different cultures, viewpoints, and lived experiences. High expectations, scaffolded support, and a clear progression of challenge empower students to achieve their full potential and engage with life in modern Britain and beyond.

Foundational Literacy and Numeracy

Literacy is at the heart of our subject. We aim to build on prior knowledge from KS2 to ensure students can read fluently, write clearly, and communicate confidently. Our focus includes: crafting a variety of writing formats, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, analysis, grammar and oracy. These foundational skills are explicitly taught and regularly revisited, giving students the tools they need to succeed not only in English but across the curriculum and in real-world situations.

Ambitious and Sequenced Learning

The English curriculum is sequenced to build from KS2 through to KS4 with increasing complexity and depth. It is underpinned by fundamental skills that are embedded and developed through thoughtfully selected topics and texts. Each unit aims to build on prior knowledge while preparing students for future learning, with opportunities for retrieval and reflection. KS3 lays strong foundations in analysis, interpretation, and expression, while KS4 aims to focus on applying these skills to more demanding literary and non-fiction texts. Our aim is for all students to meet or exceed national expectations by building curiosity, resilience and confident, adaptable learners.

Cultivating Independent Learners

We encourage students to become reflective and independent learners who are not afraid to make mistakes or take intellectual risks. Through discussion, extended writing, and self-assessment, students learn to take responsibility for their progress. Home learning/guided revision: in Y7 and Y8 there is a commitment to improving the vocabulary, reading and comprehension of students through Bedrock Learning. In KS4, a rigorous guided revision programme is interleaved with the curriculum to build on prior learning and to provide structured overlearning of essential knowledge and skills. A dedicated reading curriculum, and revision routines are embedded across key stages, with a growing emphasis on metacognitive strategies and resilience. Our curriculum builds the confidence needed for learners to question, critique, and articulate their ideas with clarity.

Holistic Personal Development

English is a powerful vehicle for personal growth. Our curriculum gives students the chance to explore complex emotions, moral dilemmas, and human relationships through literature. It nurtures empathy, creativity, and emotional intelligence. Students engage with texts that challenge their thinking and encourage them to consider their place in the world. Through speaking and listening, collaborative tasks, and creative writing, students develop the social and emotional tools necessary for responsible citizenship and lifelong learning.
