Statement

“One language sets you in a corridor of life. Two languages open every door along the way” – Frank Smith

The Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum is designed to develop passionate, capable linguists and to broaden students’ horizons through the exploration of language and culture. Our vision is to inspire a love of languages and to foster open-minded, tolerant global citizens. Through consistent development of knowledge and skills over five years, our curriculum not only prepares students for GCSE success but also equips them with lifelong communication abilities and intercultural understanding that open doors far beyond their school career.

It has five key pillars:

Inclusive and Aspirational:

Our curriculum is aspirational, encouraging students to believe in their ability to learn languages and to pursue opportunities in an increasingly interconnected world. We strive to break down barriers to language learning and promote tolerance, empathy, and ambition.

Foundational Literacy and Numeracy:

Students develop strong communication skills language (TL), including reading for gist and detail, accurate writing, listening comprehension, and oral fluency. Translation exercises build grammatical precision and enhance understanding of sentence structure, which strengthens students’ grasp of their own language. Where relevant, numeracy is embedded through activities involving dates, time, prices, and logical problem solving.

Ambitious and Sequenced Learning:

Our curriculum takes into consideration students’ prior experiences of language learning at KS2. Vocabulary and grammar are introduced and revisited systematically, allowing students to build and retain knowledge over time. Each unit builds logically on prior learning, encouraging analytical thinking and pattern recognition. We set high expectations, challenging students to manipulate language creatively and to exceed national standards through thoughtful exploration and cultural insight.

Cultivating Independent Learners:

Strategies such as learning how to learn vocabulary, revisiting grammar through spaced retrieval, and independent reading in the TL help students become reflective, self-directed learners. Students are supported to take risks, embrace mistakes as learning opportunities, and engage in out-of-class experiences (e.g. trips, and cultural events) that enhance classroom learning.

Holistic Personal Development:

The MFL curriculum contributes significantly to students’ personal development by embedding cultural capital, fostering empathy, and encouraging curiosity about other ways of life. Through exploration of real-world issues and diverse perspectives, students gain a deeper understanding of identity, society, and global citizenship. Language learning builds character, patience, perseverance, and open-mindedness, and helps students grow into respectful, informed, and articulate individuals.
