Statement

BTEC Tech Award in Health and Social Care

“Empowering future care professionals with the knowledge, empathy, and skills to make a lasting impact on the health and well-being of others.”

The Health and Social Care curriculum is designed to inspire, challenge, and equip students with the foundational knowledge and skills to thrive in both their personal and professional lives. Our vision is to nurture compassionate, confident, and capable individuals who can make a meaningful contribution to society.

Key pillars:

Inclusive and Aspirational:

The Health and Social Care curriculum embraces the rich diversity of the Rotherham community, fostering a deep respect for all cultures and backgrounds. It aims to break down barriers, promote social mobility, and encourage high aspirations for every learner. Through real-world case studies, collaborative learning, and reflective practice, students develop the confidence and skills to succeed in a wide range of health and social care roles, whilst also gaining a strong understanding of the wider world.

Foundational Literacy and Numeracy:

Effective communication is at the heart of health and social care. Our curriculum emphasises the development of strong reading, writing, and speaking skills, as well as numeracy where relevant, to ensure students can confidently interpret medical records, communicate with clients, and understand statistical data. Practical assessments and scenario-based learning provide meaningful contexts for applying these essential skills.

Ambitious and Sequenced Learning:

The BTEC Tech Award in Health and Social Care offers an ambitious and well-sequenced curriculum throughout Years 9 to 11. In Year 9, students build a strong foundation through the study of human growth and development, exploring how life events and factors impact individuals. This knowledge is deepened in Year 10, where students apply their understanding to real-world contexts by examining health and social care services and the importance of care values. By Year 11, learners are equipped to analyse health data, make informed decisions, and create health improvement plans in preparation for external assessment. Each component builds logically on the last, ensuring students develop analytical, reflective, and evaluative skills while gaining a broad and meaningful understanding of the sector.

Cultivating Independent Learners:

We prioritise the development of resilient, reflective, and resourceful students who can take ownership of their learning. Our curriculum promotes independence through the completion of Pearson Set Assignments and preparation for the externally assessed written exam. These components require students to plan, research, and apply their knowledge independently, while also encouraging critical thinking and self-reflection. This approach prepares students to face real-world challenges with confidence and creativity, fostering lifelong learning habits.

Holistic Personal Development:

Beyond academic success, our curriculum emphasises personal growth, character building, and responsible citizenship. Students are encouraged to develop empathy, ethical awareness, and interpersonal skills through experiences gained from listening to and working with health and social care professionals, as well as a focus on mental health awareness. This holistic approach nurtures well-rounded individuals who are prepared to positively contribute to society.
