Our curriculum is structured around the five key pillars of the Oakwood High School curriculum vision:
Inclusive and Aspirational:
Our science curriculum is inclusive by design, reflecting the diverse backgrounds and lived experiences of our students. It encourages all learners to see themselves as scientists, fostering high aspirations through engaging content, diverse role models, and real-world applications. Students are equipped to understand and contribute to both their local community and the global scientific community.
Foundational Literacy and Numeracy:
Scientific literacy is central to our curriculum. Students develop the ability to read, write, and communicate scientifically through a deep understanding of vocabulary, models, theories, and the scientific method. Simultaneously, they build strong scientific numeracy skills—interpreting data, using units accurately, applying arithmetic, and engaging with algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and graphical representations.
Ambitious and Sequenced Learning:
Students acquire a rich and progressively sequenced body of substantive knowledge across biology, chemistry, and physics. Our ambitious curriculum is carefully designed to ensure cumulative understanding, enabling students to articulate scientific concepts fluently and apply their knowledge with confidence and critical thinking.
Cultivating Independent Learners:
Our curriculum develops students’ disciplinary thinking by immersing them in the processes of scientific enquiry. Through devising investigations, analysing results, and evaluating methods, students build resilience and independence as learners. They become reflective problem-solvers who can reason scientifically and embrace challenges with confidence.
Holistic Personal Development:
Students explore the historical, cultural, and societal role of science in addressing global challenges such as climate change, health, and technology. We foster a lifelong curiosity about the natural world and prepare students for a wide range of STEM careers. This cultivates responsible, informed citizens ready to make meaningful contributions to society.
