Home learning Principles

At Oakwood High school we offer an exciting broad and balanced curriculum, which is designed to make a significant difference to the lives of our young people.

Alongside the curriculum, we believe it is also important for children to complete high quality and purposeful home learning that will enable them to become better independent learners who make exceptional progress.

Our home learning strategy provides the opportunity for students to take responsibility for their learning, develop time management skills and become confident, self-regulating learners.

Regular completion of home learning will aid students long term memory, deepen their understanding and build their resilience.

In Y7 and Y8, students will complete core subjects only home learnings ( Maths, English, Science, Reading). This will allow students to build time management skills and encourage independent organisation, without a cognitive overload.

In Y9 and Y10 and Y11 students will continue with weekly core home learning, with the addition of Bi-Weekly home learning tasks set in GCSE options subjects.

All home learning tasks will be relevant to work completed in lesson time, and built into the curriculum.  They will be relevant to prior learning and feedback will be provided.

Home learning Tasks

Depending on the subject, home learning is either completed on paper, google classroom or on Sparx Learning (online platform).

Reminders of the home learning tasks are given in lessons throughout the week and are also uploaded to Google Classroom and Arbor in case students forget.

When children first start at Oakwood High School, they receive their personal login credentials and create their own secure password for the school computers. These credentials are also used to login to Sparx Learning and Google Classroom. Details of how to access both Sparx Learning and Google Classroom can be found in the Guidance and support section opposite.

Many of our subjects have subject specific rewards to recognise consistent and high standards of home learning, along with rewards for exceptional effort.
