Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders: Student Leadership & School Council at Oakwood High School

At Oakwood High School, we believe that every student has the potential to lead, inspire, and shape our community. Our Student Leadership Team and School Council reflect the rich diversity of Rotherham, providing an inclusive platform where every voice is heard and valued. We are dedicated to supporting our young people as they develop into aspirational, confident, and independent individuals who strive to become the best versions of themselves.

Our Vision & Aims

Our student leadership framework is built on key developmental pillars designed to nurture both academic excellence and personal growth:

  • Inclusive and Aspirational: Reflecting our local community, our leadership opportunities ensure every student feels represented, included, and empowered to succeed.
  • Academic Support & Standards: Student leaders actively review student surveys and peer feedback to support academic progress, strengthening standards in foundational literacy, numeracy, and option choices.
  • A Structured Developmental Journey: Leadership at Oakwood is a progressive pathway. Pupils can start as School Council representatives and progress to Year Captains, Year Captain Mentors, and Head Students.
  • Cultivating Independent Thinkers: We encourage students to voice their ideas for school improvement, set personal goals, and take active ownership of their learning and environment.
  • Holistic Personal Development: Through leading projects and organizing school events, our leaders build essential life skills, character, and practical values that extend far beyond the classroom.

Student Voice in Action: The School Council

Student voice drives real change at Oakwood. Through our regular “Smart School” tutor discussions, the School Council leads debates on key topics affecting our school and wider society. Focus areas include:

  • Well-being & Mental Health: Advocating for robust student support systems.
  • Community & Culture: Celebrating diversity, anti-bullying campaigns, and promoting inclusion.
  • Environmental & School Improvement: Driving recycling initiatives and working with school catering.
  • Active Citizenship: Exploring current affairs, attendance benefits, and links to British Values such as democracy, individual liberty, and mutual respect.

Leadership Structure

Our student leadership hierarchy is organised to provide guidance, mentorship, and clear progression across all year groups:

  1. School Council Representatives: Facilitating weekly discussions and gathering peer feedback in tutor groups.
  2. Year & Deputy Year Captains: Leading year-specific initiatives and representing their peers.
  3. Year Captain Mentors: Guiding junior captains and overseeing student projects across Years 7 through 10.
  4. Head Students & Deputy Head Students: Serving as the senior student representatives, collaborating directly with school leadership, and guiding the overall strategic vision of the student body.
